Overtime Thoughts - 4/2

Check out our post on the Jay Cutler trade. Discuss about it on our message board. Vote on our poll.

Alright, I'm going to show you something pretty embarrassing for me and my beloved Pittsburgh Pirates. Check this out...

Ladies and gentlemen, we have an NIT Champion. It is my least favorite school in the country...Penn State. Congratulations to the 754 Penn State basketball fans for your team's accompishment. They defeated Baylor 69-63 tonight at MSG.

Also, for you UK fans, Ashley Judd likes the Calipari hire...watch the video...

Michael Vick has a job lined up for when he gets out of prison. It's a $10 per hour job at his dad's construction company, W.M. Jordan Co. He plans on working 40 hours a week there. That's interesting.

In NCAA coaching news, Tim Floyd said, "No thanks" to Arizona and Bruce Pearl cashed in at Tennessee after reportedly being offered the Memphis job.

Overtime Thoughts 3/30

The 3rd seeded Lady Cards were in action tonight in the Elite 8 of the Women's NCAA Tournament and defeated the 1 seed, Maryland 77-60 to advance to the school's first ever Final Four. They will play the winner of Oklahoma and Purdue on Sunday in St. Louis. Angel McCoughtry led all scorers with 21 points and also added 14 rebounds.

Still no official word yet on UK's next head coach. However, it seems like the school and John Calipari are close to working something out that will involve an astronomical amount of money.

Overtime Thoughts 3/29

Well, it's a sad day in Louisville tonight. The Cards bowed out of the NCAA Tournament with a 64-52 loss to the Michigan State Spartans. You can vent all you want on our message board.

The Tarheels from North Carolina also stamped their ticket to the Final Four with a 72-60 win over Oklahoma. They dominated from start to finish. That completes the Final Four with Michigan State, Connecticut, Villanova, and North Carolina making it this season.

Tiger Woods won his first tournament of the year today in the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a birdie putt on the 18th hole. Woods came back from 5 strokes down to win, matching his largest comeback of his career. I guess he's back.

Overtime Thoughts 3/26

So WHAS news broke today that Billy Gillispie had been fired and that it would be announced at a press conference tomorrow morning. WHAS broke the story at 9:30 PM tonight. UK followed that with:
“UK men’s basketball coach Billy Gillispie has not been fired. There have been no meetings between Gillispie and UK officials today and there is no scheduled press conference for tomorrow”
So basically, no one has any clue what's going on. WHAS is still reporting he is fired.

In the NCAA today:
#1 Pitt edged out #4 Xavier 60-55
#1 UCONN beat #5 Purdue 72-60
#3 Missouri held on against #2 Memphis 102-91
#3 Villanova spanked #2 Duke 77-54

NFL commish Roger Goodell wants the regular season to expand to 17 or 18 games hopefully as early as 2011. In order for this to happen, a new collective bargaining agreement will have to be reached between the owners and the players' union.

Overtime Thoughts - 3/25

The University of Kentucky Wildcats are out of the NIT after their 77-67 loss tonight to Notre Dame in South Bend. Let the coaching rumors begin! (like it hasn't already) But seriously, it's going to be interesting to see how Barnhart deals with this situation. As far as I see it, I think it's a lose-lose situation for the Cats. No matter what they do, it will look bad.

UCONN allegedly committed major recruiting violations when recruiting former guard Nate Miles. ESPN reports that Miles "was provided with lodging, transportation, restaurant meals and representation between 2006 and 2008 by Josh Nochimson, a former UConn student manager who had become a professional sports agent who once represented ex-Huskies star Richard Hamilton." That will be something to keep an eye on for awhile.

If you missed us last night, we talked about this. Gator Nation loves some Tim Tebow
Lance Armstrong underwent surgery on his collarbone today after crashing in the 2nd stage of a race in northern Spain. The 7-time Tour de France winner is still expected to participate in this years race.

Uh-oh, Mike Vick might be in legal trouble...again.

Overtime Thoughts 3/23

I added a section on the right hand side where you will be able to listen to past broadcasts of The Overtime Show. They're not great quality, but they're the best we can do for now. Hopefully podcasts on iTunes will be soon...I still have to figure that out.

The Kentucky Wildcats were in action today in the 2nd round of the NIT. They played the #1 seed Creighton from the Missouri Valley Conference. UK won 65-63 as they won it with a Jodie Meeks 2-pointer with about 10 seconds left. They will now travel to South Bend to face Notre Dame.

Pat Forde points out in an article on ESPN.com that the tournament has lacked a cinderella this year. It is the first time ever where all the 1, 2, and 3 seeds have made the Sweet Sixteen and only 3 teams still in have not made a Final Four. Of all years, I would have thought this year would a year where upsets would be abundant considering the way the regular season went, but it has been anything but. He also goes on to say that if Arizona, a team with a national title, 4 final fours, and 25 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, is the biggest surprise then something's different.

Curt Schilling retired today. He finished his career with a 216-146 record and a 3.46 ERA. He also is 15th all-time in strikeouts with 3,116. He owns the lowest postseason ERA and winning percentage in the history of ML baseball. He won 3 World Series titles in his career. Schilling is also the subject of our poll tonight.

And in a shocker, Terrell Owens missed a voluntary workout today for his new team, the Buffalo Bills.

Overtime Thoughts 3/22

Alright, Michael and I are back from our trip to Florida for some sun and Spring Training and are ready to roll again.

The Cardinals survived a tough Siena team tonight in a 79-72 win and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in Indianapolis to face the 12th seeded Arizona Wildcats on Friday.

Also, just a thought, Indianapolis isn't too far away. Let's snag up some tickets and turn Lucas Oil Stadium into Freedom Hall North. I just got my tickets on Ticketmaster. You can get all 3 games for as low as $90, which is a steal. You don't have to pay for a hotel cause it's a short trip there and back. Or you can get your tickets through a student lottery which costs $140. Seriously, try to make it there if you can. The Cards will need your support.

Also in the NCAA Tournament today:
#1 Pitt beat #8 Oklahoma State 84-76
#2 Michigan State squeaked by #10 USC 74-69
#3 Missouri got by #6 Marquette 83-79
#3 Kansas killed #11 Dayton 60-43
#3 Syracuse beat Arizona State 78-67
#4 Xavier handled #12 Wisconsin 60-49
#12 Arizona held off #13 Cleveland State 71-57

5 Big East teams have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, more than any other conference. The Big East is 11-2 so far in the NCAA Tournament.

Tune into ESPN tonight for the semis of the World Baseball Classic between USA and Japan. The winner faces Korea in the championship tomorrow night.

Also, if you were like Michael and I and were extremely displeased with CBS' handling of the switching of games today during the U of L game call 212-975-3247 or email raguanno@cbs.com to complain. I did both.

Overtime Thoughts - 3/10

First off, we would like to thank Howie Lindsey and George Goode for coming on our show tonight. We really appreciate it and it was awesome. Also, a big thanks to all you listeners out there and all your calls and comments.

Your #5 Lady Cards got pummeled tonight by the #1 Lady Huskies 75-36. You know it's not good when All-American Angel McCoughtry leads your team in scoring with just 9 points. With that loss, the Lady Cards will probably get a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Some Big East Tournament games:
DePaul upset Cincinnati 67-57
St. John's got past Georgetown 64-59
Notre Dame advanced against Rutgers 61-50
Seton Hall defeated South Florida 68-54

Around the top 25:
Cleveland State upset #17 Butler to win the Horizon League

Three teams punched their NCAA ticket today with Cleveland State beating Butler to win the Horizon (as said before), Western Kentucky winning the Sun Belt Conference, and North Dakota State won the Summit League.

LaDainian Tomlinson renegotiated his contract today so he will remain a Charger for at least another year.

Jay Cutler is mad at Denver for pursuing Matt Cassell. And it's getting worse.

Three other NCAA Tournament tickets were punched tonight with Gonzaga (West Coast), Sienna (Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference), and Virginia Commonwealth (Colonial).

The new rankings are out. North Carolina is #1 in both polls. Louisville is #5 in both and even racked up a #1 vote in the AP.

Overtime Thoughts - 3/8

Around the top 25:

#8 Michigan State defeated #20 Purdue 62-51
#10 Wake Forest beat #19 Clemson 96-88
#14 Gonzaga killed Santa Clara 94-59
#24 Florida State defeated Virginia Tech 63-53

Boston pitcher Jon Lester cashed in today with a 5-year, $30 million extension after a 16-6 season last year.

Alex Rodriguez will opt for surgery on his torn labrum. He will be out 6-9 weeks and will also need another operation at the end of the season.

In golf, Y.E. Yang won the Honda Classic after shooting 9-under for the tournament.

In NASCAR, Kurt Busch won the Kobalt Tools 500.

Overtime Thoughts - 3/6

Your #6 Louisville Cardinals went into Morgantown and got a very nice road win beating the West Virginia Mountaineers 62-59. With the win, the Cards won their first ever Big East Championship and will receive the #1 seed in the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden next week. Here's what the bracket will look like:

The Kentucky Wildcats lost...again. That was the clincher on losing their chances of getting an at-large bid to the NCAA's. Florida beat them 60-53 in Gainesville. Also in UK news, Mitch Barnhart has put an end to the fans' debate if the team would even accept an NIT bid. He said, "We certainly don't want to be perceived as arrogant, but we also don't want to lower the standards of what is expected at Kentucky." UK will accept an NIT bid.

Around the Big East:
#4 Pitt beat #1 UCONN (again) 70-60
#25 Syracuse upset #15 Marquette 86-79 in OT
Seton Hall defeated Cincinnati 67-63
Rutgers beat South Florida 45-42
Georgetown defeated DePaul 48-40

Around the top 25:
#3 Memphis routed Tulane 74-47
#5 Oklahoma edged Oklahoma State 82-78
#9 Kansas beat Texas 83-73
Auburn upset #11 LSU 69-53
Texas A&M upset #12 Missouri 96-86
#13 Washington beat rival Washington State 67-60
#17 UCLA defeated Oregon 94-68
Richmond upset #18 Xavier 80-75
#21 Arizona State crushed California 83-66
#22 Butler edged out Wright State 62-57

Some NCAA tournament tickets have already been punched:
East Tennessee State (Atlantic Sun Champ)
Radford (Big South Champ)
Cornell (Ivy League Champ)
Morehead State (Ohio Valley Champ)

Terrell Owens has signed a 1-year, $6.5 million contract with the Buffalo Bills

Team USA won their World Baseball Classic Opener 6-5 over Canada thanks to home runs by Kevin Youkilis, Brian McCann, and Adam Dunn.

Florida State got in trouble, and not just in football.

It was so nice outside that your Louisville baseball team decided to play twice. They won both games defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee 8-7 and Eastern Illinois 10-6 to go to 8-4 on the season.

And a side note...my favorite ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb (said with sarcasm) just said something on the lines of that Louisville can not get a one seed no matter what because all of their big games were at home. Afterwards, Joe Lunardi currently has Lousville as a #1 seed.

Join our Bracket Challenge on Facebook. The top 3 entries will win Lunch Pail gift cards for $30, $20, and $10, respectively.

Overtime Thoughts - 3/5 *Gift Card Giveaway*

Louisville travels to West Virginia tomorrow night. Gametime is 9 PM, and ESPN College Gameday will be in Morgantown. If Louisville wins and UCONN beats Pitt, they will split the Big East Championship. If Louisville wins and Pitt beats UCONN, Louisville will be the outright champ. If Louisville loses and Pitt wins, Pitt, Louisville, and UCONN will split the Big East title. If UCONN beats Pitt and Louisville loses, UCONN will win the outright championship. So, everyone's eyes should be on that Pitt/UCONN game at 12 noon. Guess the score to the Louisville/WVU game to win a free Lunch Pail gift card! Post your scores in the comments!

Kentucky plays @ Florida tomorrow at 2 PM on CBS. If UK wins, it will definitely help. Maybe not enought, but it will help. If they lose, then there is no doubt they will have to win the SEC Championship.

One game from the Big East tonight:
Notre Dame defeated St. John's 74-55

ESPN's Bracketology came out today. Louisville is a 2-seed. Kentucky is the 2nd team out.

A-Rod's doctors say that it is possible for him to play through his torn labrum this season without surgery.

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Overtime Thoughts - 3/4

Ok, I can't speak for Michael, but storming the court after beating the #23 team in the country is stupid. That's what Penn State did tonight. I could see maybe if Penn State was a team that was 7-24 or something, but they're 21-9. I just had a huge phone argument with a buddy of mine who was at the game trying to defend the students. He argued that it's not a basketball school and that the win basically clinched a NCAA Tournament bid, which is true. I still don't think that warrants a court-storming. Vote in our poll on your thoughts on if Penn State students were right to storm the court.

Around the Big East:
#16 Villanova beat Providence 87-70

Around the top 25:
#17 UCLA beat on Oregon State79-54
#18 Xavier crushed Dayton 76-59
Stanford upset #21 Arizona State 74-64
And as mentiioned before, Penn State beat #23 Illinois 64-63

Alex Rodriguez tore his labrum and has a cyst in his right hip. No decision yet on if he will undergo surgery.

In NCAA news, Alabama may have gotten themselves into quite a pickle after admitting to NCAA rules violations that student-athletes received free textbooks and supplies in 2006-2007. Alabama was placed on probation in 2002. If this is considered a repeat offense, they could face tougher sanctions.

Overtime Thoughts - 3/4

Louisville's seniors (and Earl Clark) made sure they were sent off with a bang tonight and made sure the Cards were still in the running for a Big East Championship in a 95-78 win over Seton Hall. Earl Clark went off for a double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Terrence Williams was two assists shy of a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists. Senior Andre McGee added 11 points and freshman Terrence Jennings added 14 points off the bench. The Cards are now tied with UCONN at 15-2 in the Big East heading into Morgantown on Saturday night.

Kentucky could have played itself off the bubble tonight, and not in the good way. They picked a bad time to have their worst loss of the season as they lost to a 205th ranked Georgia team at home that had only two conference wins 90-85. It's going to start getting really interesting from here until Selection Sunday to see how this UK team will be handled. In our opinion, the Cats now have to win the SEC Tournament to be safe. Vote in our poll about the Cats tournament chances and post your comments below.

Around the Big East:
#4 Pitt beat #15 Marquette 90-75
West Virginia pounded DePaul 82-63

Around the top 25:
#2 North Carolina beat Virginia Tech 86-78
#3 Memphis won at Houston 69-60
#12 Missouri handled #5 Oklahoma 73-64
Texas Tech pulled off a huge upset over #9 Kansas 84-65
Vanderbilt upset #11 LSU 75-67
Northwestern went on the road and beat #20 Purdue 64-61

In the NFL, Ray Lewis agreed to another three years with Baltimore, Kurt Warner and Arizona agreed to a 2-year, $23 million deal, and WR Laveranues Coles signed a 4-year, $28 million deal with the Bengals.

In surprising news, WR Terrell Owens was cut by Dallas tonight.

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers have finally come to an agreement on a 2-year $45 million contract.

Today was the NHL trading deadline. Click here for info on all the last-minute deals.

Overtime Thoughts - 3/3 *Gift Card Giveaway*

Louisville plays Seton Hall tomorrow at Freedom Hall at 7 PM. Predict the final score of the game in our comments below to win a $10 Lunch Pail gift card!

Kentucky also plays a game against Georgia at home. It will also be senior night for the Cats as they will honor the great Jared Carter.

Also, if you haven't yet, vote for Terrence Williams for the Senior Class Award. It takes like 10 seconds to vote and you can vote once per day.

Some scores from around the Big East:
#25 Syracuse pounded Rutgers 70-40
South Florida upset Cincinnati and probably shattered the Bearcats' at-large hopes in a 70-59 win.
St. John's also pulled off a huge upset to knock Georgetown back off the bubble 59-56 in OT

Around the top 25:
#7 Duke squeaked one out over #24 Florida State 84-81
#8 Michigan State beat Indiana 64-59
#10 Wake Forest edged out Maryland 65-63
#13 Washington killed Seattle 87-60
#14 Gonzaga crushed USC Upstate 90-40

The Coast Guard called off the search for the 3 missing football players after their boat capsized this weekend. The call was made after covering 24,000 square miles of ocean in the last 3 days.

Manny and the Dodgers are VERY close to signing a 2-year $45 million deal.

Also, don't forget to vote in our poll on Earl Clark and his future in the NBA.

Monday, March 2, 2009

Overtime Thoughts - 3/2

There was only one game of note tonight in college basketball and that was #16 Villanova's 77-60 win over Notre Dame. I'm pretty sure that officially knocks Notre Dame off of the bubble.

Your #8 Louisville women's basketball team played the final game of their season tonight and won their school record-tying 27th game of the year in a 66-61 win at Marquette. Angel McCoughtry notched a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

Louisville first baseman Andrew Clark was named Big East Player of the Week last week. He batted .375 with 2 HR and 7 RBI and helped lead the Cardinals to a perfect 4-0 week.

Wide Reciever T.J. Houshmandzadeh signed a 5-year deal worth over $40 million with the Seattle Seahawks.

To go back to college basketball, this weeks rankings are out. Louisville is still #6 in both polls.

Also, not really a surprise, but Earl Clark IS going to the NBA after this year and will partake in Senior Night festivities in Wednesday's game. Vote on our poll on whether you think he should be able to do that or not.

Overtime Thoughts - 2/26

As was pointed out in the comments, A.J. Stewart has quit the Kentucky basketball team. Uhhh, this can't be good for the Cats. Stewart isn't exactly a great player that will be missed, but this is starting to become a disturbing trend with Gillispie and players quitting/leaving. It also makes one wonder if there will be more defections before long.

In Big East action:
Cincinnati beat West Virginia 65-61

Around the top 25:
#4 Memphis won at UAB 71-60
#21 Washington took down #11 Arizona St 73-70 in OT
#14 Wake Forest beat NC State 85-78
Michigan upset #16 Purdue 87-78
#17 Gonzaga beat Santa Clara 81-73
#19 UCLA held on to beat Stanford 76-71
#20 Illinois defeated Minnesota 52-41
#22 Xavier beat St. Joseph's 68-54
#23 Butler crushed Youngstown State 78-57

It was ruled today that Mike Vick will be able to spend the last 2 months of his sentence under home confinement. I guess if I had to spend 2 months in "prison" I'd like to spend it in a $748,100 home, which is the least valuable of Vick's four homes.

Tom Brady married supermodel Gisele Bundchen today. Bundchen is the highest paid supermodel in the world with earnings of over $35 million per year.

The NBA took out a $200 million loan.

Tim Clark beat Tiger Woods today 4 and 2 in the 2nd round of the WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship.

The Louisville baseball team plays at home Friday at 2 PM versus Bowling Green. You all should try to make it out. They got $1 beers and $1 hot dogs during the game out in left field.

Overtime Thoughts - 2/25

Once again, thanks to everyone who listened to our inaugural show last night! It was a lot of fun to do and we can't wait to do it again next Tuesday. Also, please help the show grow by telling everyone you know about it.

So last night, we talked about how UK had a game tonight. I guess they forgot. Because they sure as heck did not show up to play in Columbia, SC as they got hammered by the Gamecocks 77-59. Jodie Meeks scored 18 and Patrick Patterson had 28 points. But like like we were saying last night, someone else needs to step up. Only three other Wildcats scored and the highest scorer of those three was Darius Miller with 5 points. That's not going to cut it. South Carolina's Devan Downey led the Gamecocks with 21 points.

There was a HUGE Big East game tonight in Milwaukee, WI as the #10 Marquette Golden Eagles faced off against the #2 UCONN Huskies. UCONN pulled ahead at the end and won 93-82. Marquette suffered a big blow in the first half when they lost PG Dominic James for the season with a broken bone in his foot. A.J. Price went off for 36 points.

Other scores from around the Big East:
#12 Villanova squeaked one out over DePaul 74-72
Notre Dame beat Rutgers 70-65
Seton Hall took down South Florida 75-60

From around the top 25:
#7 Duke beat Maryland 78-67
#8 Missouri killed Kansas State 94-74
#9 Michigan State beat Iowa 62-54
Virginia Tech upset #13 Clemson 80-77
#24 Texas held off Texas Tech 87-81

Your Louisville baseball team beat Eastern Kentucky 9-8 on a walk-off single by Adam Duvall. Preseason National Player of the Year Chris Dominguez was 3-5 with 4 RBI and a homer shy of a cycle.

New York Giants' RB Brandon Jacobs signed a 4-year, $25 million extension today.

After cutting 169 jobs, NFL commish Roger Goodell will take a 20% pay cut from his $11 million salary he earned this fiscal year.

The first day of spring training games was today. Check here for a scoreboard of all the games from the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues.

The Los Angeles Dodgers offered Manny Ramirez yet another contract. This one, Manny would receive $25 million this year with a player option in 2010 that would be worth $20 million.

Tiger Woods beat Brendan Jones 3 and 2 in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Tournament today.

Monday, February 23, 2009

Overtime Thoughts - 2/23

Your #6 Louisville Cardinals went into D.C. and handed Georgetown a devastating loss. The Cards totally dominated the Hoyas in a 76-58 win. Terrence Williams had a double-double and Earl Clark had 22 points. Tune into our show Tuesday night at 9 PM for more of our thoughts!

A Blake Griffin-less Oklahoma Sooner team
lost to Kansas tonight 87-78. That is two in a row now for the Sooners for those counting.

Donovan McNabb is
putting off signing an extension with the Eagles until he sees what else Philly will do in the offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts will
end their relationship with WR Marvin Harrison later this week after Harrison refused to take a pay cut.

Overtime Thoughts - 2/22 *Gift Card Giveaway*

Your #7 Louisville Cardinals (21-5, 12-2) play @ Georgetown (14-11, 5-9) tomorrow night on ESPN's Big Monday. The game will be at 7 PM. The Hoyas are coming off a tough loss at home to #11 Marquette on Saturday. This is a must win game for the Hoyas. I have to think if they do not find a way to win this one, they will be heading to the NIT. Guess the score of the game in our comments to win a $10 gift card to the Lunch Pail!!

Around the Big East:
#14 Villanova outlasted #25 Syracuse 89-86
West Virginia won at Rutgers 74-56
St. John's defeated Seton Hall 70-65

Around the top 25:
#5 Michigan State defeated Wisconsin 61-50
#9 Duke beat #8 Wake Forest 101-91

#17 Xavier crushed George Washington 71-53

#11 Florida finished their 3-game sweep over our #17 Louisville baseball team with a 3-2 win today in Gainesville. The Cards return home with a game this Wednesday against Eastern Kentucky at 2 PM.

Oklahoma's Blake Griffin's status is still uncertain for the Sooners' game against Kansas on Big Monday. Griffin suffered a concussion in the first half of last night's loss to Texas.

Phil Mickelson had a 4-shot lead going into the final round of the Northern Trust Open today. He somehow lost that lead and came from behind to defeat Steve Stricker by one shot to earn his 35th career PGA win. It was his first tournament of the year. All eyes in the golf world will be on Tiger Woods next weekend as he will play for the first time since last year's US Open, which he won on basically one leg.
