Overtime Thoughts 3/22

Alright, Michael and I are back from our trip to Florida for some sun and Spring Training and are ready to roll again.

The Cardinals survived a tough Siena team tonight in a 79-72 win and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in Indianapolis to face the 12th seeded Arizona Wildcats on Friday.

Also, just a thought, Indianapolis isn't too far away. Let's snag up some tickets and turn Lucas Oil Stadium into Freedom Hall North. I just got my tickets on Ticketmaster. You can get all 3 games for as low as $90, which is a steal. You don't have to pay for a hotel cause it's a short trip there and back. Or you can get your tickets through a student lottery which costs $140. Seriously, try to make it there if you can. The Cards will need your support.

Also in the NCAA Tournament today:
#1 Pitt beat #8 Oklahoma State 84-76
#2 Michigan State squeaked by #10 USC 74-69
#3 Missouri got by #6 Marquette 83-79
#3 Kansas killed #11 Dayton 60-43
#3 Syracuse beat Arizona State 78-67
#4 Xavier handled #12 Wisconsin 60-49
#12 Arizona held off #13 Cleveland State 71-57

5 Big East teams have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, more than any other conference. The Big East is 11-2 so far in the NCAA Tournament.

Tune into ESPN tonight for the semis of the World Baseball Classic between USA and Japan. The winner faces Korea in the championship tomorrow night.

Also, if you were like Michael and I and were extremely displeased with CBS' handling of the switching of games today during the U of L game call 212-975-3247 or email raguanno@cbs.com to complain. I did both.

  1. -What I don't understand is why CBS would provide a constant feed for every site, but only one HD feed. During the switching fiasco, I could still watch the UL game, as well as the Marquette game, but the HD feed had switched to the Michigan State game. This wasn't as big a national deal as the end of regulation in the Wisconsin/Florida State game when they switched with the final shot in the air.

-The return of Dominic James for Marquette could have been a bracket buster had he not been a little on the rusty side. I'm sure a broken foot isn't easy to come back from.

-Speaking of Marquette, what a tough way to lose...

-Roy Oswalt just took a beating in the 4th inning

-And the clouds of change are absolutely(and unfortunately) swirling around the University of Kentucky Basketball program. After the NIT win in Memorial(it was an awesome atmosphere, btw), reality has set in and an NIT title could be the only thing that saves Billy Gillispie's job at UK.

A telling sign is Mitch Barnhart not coming out and giving his coach a vote of confidence. This could mean that no decision has been made, but when your year could end after your next game in just your second season, things aren't good.

If Gillispie does come back and an NIT championship is NOT the reason, Mitch Barnhart has handled the situation poorly as an athletic director.

Chances are Gillispie's actions off the court and NOT what has happened on the court will be the ultimate reason he gets the axe, if that's what happens.

As a UK fan, I think Gillispie can turn the program around and win many, many games, however, he said he wasn't "hired to be an ambassador" and at UK, that is unacceptable. His interactions with the media might have been perfectly fine at UTEP and Texas A&M, but UK is basketball.

  2. I thought the flipping between games of today's Louisville game was absurd. The fact we watched the last 3 minutes of the Marquette/Mizzou game was simply uncalled for.

I agree about Friday with the FSU/Wisconsin game. I was in Florida at the time and if I were a Seminole fan I would have been going insane.

It's going to be interesting what happens at UK. I don't really know what's going on there behind the scenes. But if Gillispie is back next year it is ridiculous that Barnhart hasn't said so by now.

And yeah, Team USA is getting rocked. Glad to see my boy John Grabow get the job done, though.

  3. I missed most of the CBS game switching issues b/c I where we were in Saint Matthews we had pretty continuos coverage of 2 or 3 games at a time & only lost our game for about 5 seconds one time when we got half a commercial.

As for how the game went, Sienna is a good team & we have a target on our backs as the #1 team in the country. The important thing is that we got the win & are headed to Indy.

Watching the ladies absolutely dominate Liberty. Still think they got robbed though being the 3 seed in Baton Rouge & having to face 6 seed LSU on the Tigers' home court in the second round. What happened to the higher seeds getting geographical preference???

  4. Rumor has it that the NCAA Women's Selection Committee likes to reward schools with female head coaches...something Jeff Walz obviously isn't. They got HOSED big time.
