Overtime Thoughts - 3/4

Louisville's seniors (and Earl Clark) made sure they were sent off with a bang tonight and made sure the Cards were still in the running for a Big East Championship in a 95-78 win over Seton Hall. Earl Clark went off for a double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Terrence Williams was two assists shy of a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists. Senior Andre McGee added 11 points and freshman Terrence Jennings added 14 points off the bench. The Cards are now tied with UCONN at 15-2 in the Big East heading into Morgantown on Saturday night.

Kentucky could have played itself off the bubble tonight, and not in the good way. They picked a bad time to have their worst loss of the season as they lost to a 205th ranked Georgia team at home that had only two conference wins 90-85. It's going to start getting really interesting from here until Selection Sunday to see how this UK team will be handled. In our opinion, the Cats now have to win the SEC Tournament to be safe. Vote in our poll about the Cats tournament chances and post your comments below.

Around the Big East:
#4 Pitt beat #15 Marquette 90-75
West Virginia pounded DePaul 82-63

Around the top 25:
#2 North Carolina beat Virginia Tech 86-78
#3 Memphis won at Houston 69-60
#12 Missouri handled #5 Oklahoma 73-64
Texas Tech pulled off a huge upset over #9 Kansas 84-65
Vanderbilt upset #11 LSU 75-67
Northwestern went on the road and beat #20 Purdue 64-61

In the NFL, Ray Lewis agreed to another three years with Baltimore, Kurt Warner and Arizona agreed to a 2-year, $23 million deal, and WR Laveranues Coles signed a 4-year, $28 million deal with the Bengals.

In surprising news, WR Terrell Owens was cut by Dallas tonight.

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers have finally come to an agreement on a 2-year $45 million contract.

Today was the NHL trading deadline. Click here for info on all the last-minute deals.

  1. UK must win the SEC to get in. Wins over Florida, UT, AND LSU will do it, but the only chance to beat LSU will be in the championship game.

It amazes me at how little this team has done over the course of the season to improve as a team. The team has had no inside-out game at all this season and there's no excuse. Something as simple as a zone defense can hinder the dribble penetration that UK has had trouble with all season long.

Since the 54 point game in Knoxville, Jodie Meeks has had a man on him like white on rice and Patterson has seen a double team down low whenever he gets the ball.

The constant pressure on Jodie doesn't allow him to break free for a shot anymore. This causes the freshmen and Porter to force passes down low that turn into turnovers majority of the time. If Patterson does get the ball, there's no doubt he's going to go up with it. The defenders know this and that's why UK has had a TON of shots blocked in the paint recently. A simple kick out to the perimeter could work wonders with Darius Miller and Michael Porter's new found confidence.

When Meeks gets the ball, he doesn't want to pass it either. He'll either force up an ugly three or try and drive to the basket without any potential options. Jodie is trying to do too much and showing a lack of confidence in the rest of his team.

Regardless of UK having both Patterson and Meeks, they almost do more harm to the team than good by not working together on the court. All of this, however, falls on the coach for not addressing these issues throughout the season. Maybe he needs to spend his time coaching, rather than throwing the media and his players under the bus.

  2. I couldn't agree more on just about everything you said. They have to win the SEC Tournament. The loss to Georgia is just too bad.

Meeks has it in his mind that in order for UK to win, he needs to score a ton of points. When in reality, he draws so much attention that if he ever kicked the ball out on all those drives to the basket, it leads a wide open Porer, or Liggins, or Gallaway.

All of this goes on Billy G's shoulder in that he has not shown any signs of having any clue on how to coach this team. He has now started to solely rely on Meeks and Patterson and is oblivious on how to utilize their abilities.
